Norway in a Nutshell, Oslo to Flam and then to Bergen onthe Flam railway and cruising the Fjord.

We took the 4:5 hour train to Mydral going past constant water views, fjords and lakes. Some really stunning scenery.

then a change to do the Flam railway, said to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Yes some stunning scenery but spoilt by to many tunnels ( 20 ) some dug by hand with a pick. The train, using a electrical resistance braking system runs down the valley ascending 865 metres ,a 1 in 10 grade to the tourist town of Flam which sits at the end of the Naeroyfjord the narrowest and wildest in Norway and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

This fjord runs off the Sognefjord which is 204 km long and the deepest fjord in Norway.

Unfortunately the rain stopped us from going out in the afternoon from our lovely guesthouse Svingen which had amazing views down the fjord obscured by haze and cloud.

On the way down the train stops at Kjosflossen waterfall where a dancer in a red dress dances. She is Huldra , an elusive norweigen forest spirit of mythical origin and she dances to a norweigen folk song. see above

Dinner at the marina with the same views.

Day two

Too wet to do to much so a day wandering the towns shops and visiting the flams railway museum.

Then back to our lovely guesthouse for a quiet afternoon with an amazing view from the loungeroom window even if the fjord had a lot of cloud cover.

Day 3

We left the guest house for the 9:30 cruise to Gudvagen, a two hour cruise through the Naeroyfjord with stunning scenery and huge mountains towering over the fjord. Waterfalls were by the millions.

At Gudvagen it was straight to the bus for the trip to Voss. We stopped at Stalheim and another stunning view.

and down to Voss .

After an hours wait for the train we looked around Voss and then caught the train to Bergen, travelling along the river again.

Next Bergen
