Whitby
was our stay for three nights. A sea side town where Capt Cook from age 17 spent Nine years here doing his training for Navigation to become a sea captain.
Our accommodation was a self contained unit and Weatherspoons pub our dinner venue a ten minute walk down the hill, a main meal and pint of beer for 13 pound

day1
We walked in town, and wandered around lots of shops and streets plus out to the West pier and lighthouse.
We watched a video on the last lifeboat that was used until 1955 at the life boat museum
then walked up the cliff area to Capt cook statue and the whalebone arch overlooking Whitby
then walked onto Louis Carrol’sl small garden for Alice in Wonderland inspired by his time here.
Then back into town to do a small sea cruise on a weird pirate boat, where we saw Whitby from the sea.
Lunch was next and we had prawns, fishcakes and mussells at Abbey Wharf.
Then the walk continued on the east side of the bridge seeing the harbour from the eastern pier
and shops selling the local Jet rock, souvenirs castle shaped sand buckets which I bought for the twins, Kiphers and many other items.
We saw the 199 steps to the Abbey which we didnt do today but did walk down them the next day.
The capt cook museum was next, his replica ship in the harbour.
and back up the hill to our unit exhausted.
Day2
We visited the replica ship of the Endeavour at the harbour the boat Cook used for his voyage to discover the east coast of Australia
Then took the on off bus around town ending up at the Abbey.The abbey was built in 657 AD
later destroyed by the vikings and fixed by the Normans in 1087.
Destroyed by King Henry in the 15c and later it followed private ownership and now national heritage.
Whitby abbey inspired Bram Stokers Dracula.
We lunched at The brewery

Also on the headland was St Marys church 1110 C was a strange church with pews in all directions.
Then we did the 199 steps to the town ,wandered around for a while and went to Magpie cafe famous for seafood. We shared a plate of seafood prawns, one large prawn and others were canned babies, oysters, mussels, little scallops very different to ours about size a one cent piece but thick and hmmm yuk! Crevettes like a pippy, Anchovies but not to salty and ok and Whitby crab which they do with a mushy vinegar/malt thickener Not great!
Still it was nice to try a variety of seafood!
As we left Whitby on the coast we went back to the Moors to
Goathland
We drove into Moors to Goathland , the town where heartbeat was filmed. Saw the pub , garage village shops where sheep wander around everywhere and the old police car used in the show is parked outside the shops.
The railway station of Goathland was quaint and is where the north yorkshire trains runs through.
We continued on top of the moors for a while, the pretty purple heather everywhere
Past more little villages and a squirrel on the road
then descended and ascended up and down steep small lanes to cross the moors to the coast pasing some lovely scenery and bridges.
I’d love to see the replica ship of the Endeavour, where you allowed onboard ???
