The romantic road starts at Würzburg a lovely town on the Main river . Our car park camp for two nights overlooks this river with just a 10-15 min walk to town….perfect! The big barges going by on the river only metres away.
The old stone bridge takes you into town and this bridge is not to be missed for its tradition of everyone drinking wine on the bridge which we did both afternoons.
The fortress Marienberg and vineyards overlook the town and the bridge making the scenery on the bridge a lovely setting.
The bridge erected from 1473 to 1543 is a Romanesque style with statues of saints added in 1730.
First after the bridge is the Rathaus with Wurzberg history and the Grafeneckart and town hall. Its Romanesque tower and a 13 th c hall. Underneath was a rat Keller Restaurant and bar where we dined the first night.
Then the towers and gates of the town attract your attention
but behind the gates erected here is the domed shaped building of Saint Killian and where the saint was buried.
The other church close by was magnificent inside.
We viewed many other building but the prince bishop residence is the highlight
UNESCO world heritage it is south German baroque era architecture.
Built in 1720 -1744 but partially destroyed in WW2 three weeks before the war finished. The magnificent staircase and imperial hall survived and the whole building had been restored along with furnishings and frescoes.
The chapel is stunning and jaw dropping the picture tell the story.
we now start the Romantic strasse which ends at fussen south Germany.
Briefly saw Lauda – Konigshofen with its timber houses
but it was not really that Interesting. That morning it was really heavy rain in parts and and we soon realized stopping to explore the little towns was impossible with no where to park. So in the end we just drove on to our Shelplatz in Rothenburg on der tauber and spent the afternoon touring this lovely but very touristy town.
Rothernberg had walls around parts of the city which we walked around plus the spital gate a large round building used to protect the city
The town had five gates and towers most of which were original and not destroyed in WW2 as the city surrendered to the nazis to prevent it being bombed.
Rothenburg on der tauber was a very nazi town during the war and below is the witches hanging apppartus used in the middle ages.
We bought snow balls a local delicacy .
A lovely town but very touristy.
South we stopped briefly at Feuchtwangen for a 10 min walk
around then onto Dinkelsbuhl to the camp just 400 m from the old town. A lovely walk around a beautiful town where all the buildings are different colours and all well kept.
We visited the museum and stopped at a cafe and saw all the old towers and gates of the city. A town not destroyed in Ww2 it still has its city walls.
Onto Nordlingen and a short stroll around this walled city ,
bought John some t shirts and jeans for his birthday then moved onto Augsburg to do the washing. At laundromat we ran into an Aussie from the central coast who’s son was playing in a tennis tournament here , he told us about some free parking so we camped in parking lot near the tennis for the night.
We have decided not to go to ULM or see more of Augsburg and moved south. We have seen enough of little medieval villages, all lovely but becoming repetitive. This ended the romantic road.
