Budapest 2026

We arrive by train which was uneventful and took a uber to our accommodation in the centre of the Pest side and next to Stephens Baskilia. We could see the dome etc of the Bascilia from the walkway outside the unit. What a great spot. After lunch it was shopping for breakfast and a thai takeaway for dinner.

The air con in our unit barely works and neither does the fridge so the owner brought us a fan and got the handyman to fix the fridge door the next day.

Day2

A big day walking 10 miles.

First over the Liberty square Which is in Lipotvaros neighbourhood, it honours the Red Army soldiers who died in the city in WW2. The Ronald Regan statue is bronze.

then over to Kossuth Lagos square behind Parliament house for morning tea, we had had little for breakfast as there is no toaster in the unit and this was the plan for breakfast. I tried a budapest coffee very nice but very rich

We looked for tickets for parliament house but not wanting to go at 4:45 decided to come back another day.

We walked along the Danube seeing the sites on the Buda side, the castle

the Fishermans Bastian and surrounding churches and buildings

Then on the pest side we saw the shoes made of metal o the Danube , representing the death of thousands of people massacred by fascisit Hungarian Militia during WW2. Victims were ordered to take off their shoes and were shot at the edge of the river so their bodies fell into the river that carried the bodies away. The shoes represent shoes left on the river- bank.

then past the main bridge, chain bridge

we saw the famous bronze statue of the “little Princess”, not far from chain bridge. One of Budapests many bronze statues and recognizable landmarks. It is meant to be good luck to rub her knees.

moving to Vodosmarty square near a shopping area, away from the river promenade.

and down a long pediatrist street with loads of shops to the Great central market with its lovely tiled roof

Viewed Liberty bridge , its green

and looked across to the Hungarians liberty statue, the citadel and Gellert Hill.

the cruise ships to Amsterdam are moored here near Liberty bridge.

We had a traditional Hungarian lunch nearby

Goulash soup, Paprika chicken both traditional dishes with Dreher beers and a dessert. Sharing of course.

Then we did more walking across town to the Hungarian museum

a synagoue, no picture and back to the apartment.

Day 2

We walked over chain bridge and stupidily took the funicular to the top , wow stupid expensive, should of taken the bus.

walked around the castle areas, not going inside, its now a art museum.

The views over the Pest side and Danube amazing.

We took photos of the Citadell but decided we were to lazy to walk the hill to see it closer.

then past the Mathias church which was closed for services

then around Fishmans Bastian. Built 1895 – 1902 tower features 7 Hungarian chieftains who led their tribes to settle in895.

It was built between 1895 and 1902 to celebrate Hungarian millennium and is iconic neo-gothic and neo- Romanesque for its terraces.

The Bastian overlooked Parliament house on the Pest side.

We continued walking past more lovely churches and squares.

We walked down a heap of stairs and through a park to the Danube, found a nice place for a traditional goulash

saw the church with a beautiful roof seen from the pest side. It was the first reformed church in Buda, a neo gothic construction.

Back across Chain bridge, 10 kms and rested for the afternoon.

day3

We got a early start to get a tour of the Parliament.

The building was built between 1885 and 1902. it is stunning inside and out and holds the crown jewels only used for coronations and believed to from the 11c and has been lost and found many times.

Then after a short walk past the outside statues of parliament

we took the tram to The New York cafe and where lucky to find no line up and got straight in. Managed some photos but didnt stay for coffee and cake as it would of cost us $100 and despite the elegant building we delimed and later found a little bakery and had a apple pasty and coffee $13:00 for both of us and it was yummy.

We walked to the opera house looked inside the foyer

then back to the unit for the afternoon and left over Langos from last night. Langus is a pizza style but a light batter with sour cream and cheese, mine with bacon Johns with salami. It is traditionally Hungarian, nice but rich.

We were going to look in St Stephens bascilia next door to us but they wanted $31 each to go in … no way …. seen a million churches and certainty not paying this enormous amount to see another.

We indulged in a ice-cream made like a flower on our way home after the cruise.

Day 4

We took the metro to Szechenyi thermal baths and enjoyed the morning testing all the different baths and water temps.

Our favourite the outdoor pool which had a spa and fast running circuit in the middle which was fun until all the fatties run you over, never seen so many big people wearing some dreadful swimwear.
