Edinburgh, Scotland 2025

After leaving Berwick upon tweed we drove the A1 north into Scotland our first stop Dunbar where we stopped at harbour for morning tea by the car.

We saw the remains of St andrews Kirk at Dunbar , in1656 it was destroyed by storms.

The point had a seabird centre where we had lunch and were disappointed we could do the boat trip to see the puffins and other birds at the island off shore, too wet and cold and the tours were booked out.

The town was an established from the 1300s.

Off to Edinburgh

Edinburgh

Our first night it was rainy and cold so we stayed at the hotel.

day one Edinburgh

We caught the bus in from the hotel and purchased the 48 hr on and off bus castle ,palace and britannia ticket, package 71 pds each.

We took the red bus around past the Princess Gardens and St Cuthberts church and cross and Ross fountain

,down grassmarket and Greyfriars bobby to the castle stop and walked part of the Royal Mail to the Castle.

The castle was built initially on castle rock in 1103 and has had many extensions since this time

It has numerous war and infantry museums with mounds of history all to hard to remember.

The crown jewels are in the Honours of Scotland but no photos were allowed and the same in the apartments.

There were dungeons , prisioner of wars sections

The great hall was built in 1513 and had displays of armour and swords

We spent 3 hours here and raced through a lot of it.

But exited just in time to see the one o’clock gunfire used to set time exactly.

We walked down part of the Royal mile , visited St giles cathredral ,

the old town and Victoria street with its colourful buildings.

Then back on the on off bus for a look around Edinburgh.

Weather-spoons for late lunch/dinner.

Day 2

Started with a walk up Calton hill on castle rock formed 340 million years ago and where the citys monuments are situated.

Nelsons , national monument and playfair monument .

View point to Arthurs seat and salisbury crags also 340 millions years ago produced by volcano eruptions and later the ice age 2.5 million years ago.

The Blue bus route was our next activity. We saw

The Scot monument 200 ft high gothic style.

We went past Dean village and Fettes college and past the Botanical gardens

and on to New Haven Banks on the forth of the fifth river and lighthouse.

Royal Britannia at the port of Leith

We stopped for morning tea at greggs coffee x2 a sausage roll and donut 5:90 amazing prices

Britannia was the queens ship for 45 years until decommissioned in 1997

It was quiet amazing inside and the crew of 200 , what a huge expense!

Holyroodhouse Palace was next, this is

The kings residence when in Scotland. One section is 11c… the Abbey and others are 15C and 17 C .Inside was grand.

No photos were allowed inside so we took photos of the audio but they came out poorly.

We took another photo of Arthurs seat and a Typical Red Bus.

Then back to Weatherspoons for a cheap late lunch/dinner
